The UNC School of Medicine’s online training for Physical Therapists and other health professionals surpassed a milestone this week; reaching 5,000 trainees. The Otago Exercise Program is an evidence-based falls prevention program developed in New Zealand that reduces falls up to 40%. Dr. Jan Busby-Whitehead, MD, Division Chief of the UNC Division of Geriatrics says “It is imperative that we train as many practitioners in the workforce in falls prevention because 1 in every 3 older adults fall each year and often it is a sentinel health event leading to hospitalization, institutionalization and even death.” The training has reached all 50 states and 9 foreign countries including, the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy, Sweden, South Africa, Malta, Israel and Singapore.
