Strategic Plan

Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences Strategic Plan (2021-2023)

Our strategic plan aligns with and supports our mission to engage in evidence-based teaching, research, and service aimed at understanding, preventing, diagnosing, and treating disorders of speech, language, hearing, and balance.

The overarching goals of our strategic plan are to:

Increase access to our degree programs by:

  1. Expanding access for undergraduate students to our speech and hearing minor
  2. Obtaining resources needed for a continued modest increase in cohort size for our degree programs

Expand scholarships, funding, and research opportunities by:

  1. Partnering with our departmental development officer and alumni to establish an endowed scholarship fund to offer more financial support for students
  2. Aligning with the departmental Office of Research to increase grant-writing resources and professional development for faculty and students

Expand clinical education opportunities by:

  1. Increasing number and variety of clinical preceptors
  2. Providing added value for clinical preceptors in terms of access to University resources and continuing education
  3. Expanding interdisciplinary clinic offering at UNC’s Hearing and Communication Center

Increase interdisciplinary and community-based service learning opportunities by:

  1. Expanding the established interdisciplinary interprofessional education (IPE) course to include more SLP and AuD students
  2. Increasing interdisciplinary service learning opportunity with a focus on working in rural communities
  3. Collaborating with University, School of Medicine and Departmental IPE offerings to increase faculty participation in case development and IPE opportunities
