NCTraCS Pilot Funding

Deadlines: October, February, June

Funding: $2k-$50k (some require 50% match, see RFA for details)

Description and Eligibility: NC TraCS has issued a pilot RFA focused on Clinical and Translational Science. The 2 step application process begins with a Concept Proposal due October 11, 2022. More info can be found at the TraCS website.

UNC Lineberger Developmental Funding Program

Deadlines: September

Funding: T1 $50k/1 yr  |  T2 $100k/1-2yrs

Description and Eligibility: All Cancer Center members and UNC faculty may apply.

Tier 1 Pilot (1 PI)
Tier 2 Stimulus (1-2PIs)

Each tier accepts basic, translational and population proposals related to cancer research.

Center for Innovation- Health Care Innovation Awards

Deadlines: Fall

Funding: up to $50k

Description and Eligibility: PI must be from UNC Healthcare or SOM

Supports Innovative care delivery models and care pathways; new technology deployments; advanced analytics; business model innovations; workforce development

KickStart Innovation Awards

Deadlines: January and July

Funding: $25,000 to $50,000

Description and Eligibility: The KickStart Award Program helps early-stage companies meet commercial milestones either on the technical side (prototype development, animal studies) or on the business side (regulatory pathway, freedom to operate).

Eshelman Institute for Innovation Awards

Deadlines: See website and contact for details

Funding: 1-2 years, variety of funding levels

Description and Eligibility: Therapeutics Proposals:

The Eshelman Institute seeks to fund translational research related to therapeutics focused on oncology, infectious disease, and neuroscience (including rare diseases). However, the Institute welcomes ideas for devices and diagnostics, and other therapeutic areas and services.

Opportunistic Proposals are also accepted.

Digital Health Venture Studio:

After a Venture Studio sprint, some concepts are deemed to be very attractive potential startups and would be eligible for a non-dilutive Eshelman Institute validation grant. These concepts get support to get the concept in position for launching as a future startup.

Funding: Up to $10K

Description and Eligibility: The Junior Faculty Development Award is for untenured assistant or associate professors. Support for research or scholarly project.

Creativity Hubs Pilot Award

Deadlines: See website for details

Funding: Up to $250,000

Description and Eligibility: Promotes the development of innovative ideas that emerge from cross-disciplinary interactions to address key challenges and develop new knowledge. Funded projects are expected to lead to large-scale extramural funding.

The team leader must have a primary faculty appointment at UNC-Chapel Hill or Center/Institute and can serve as a Principal Investigator. Teams must also include researchers from multiple schools/college and/or Center and Institutes.

UNC IDEA Seed Grant

Deadlines: Rolling deadline, see website

Funding: $5,000 – $20,000 for up to 1 year.

Description and Eligibility: The UNC Idea Grant is a pilot funding program sponsored by the OVCR that encourages researchers to develop novel ideas that address important problems or roadblocks to a current line of inquiry. This competition is open to any field of research and/or scholarship conducted by UNC-CH researchers.
