National rankings of UNC SOM basic science and clinical departments based on NIH funding.

The SOM continues to maintain national prominence in NIH funding. The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research releases yearly rankings for NIH funding for medical schools. For FY2025, UNC School of Medicine #18 nationally in NIH funding and #5 among public schools of medicine. Total NIH funding reached $353 million, a $4 million increase over FY24. Five basic science departments ranked in the top 10, including two ranked #1, and ten clinical departments ranked in the top 30, with seven improving their rankings from last year. In addition, 23 SOM faculty rank in the top 5% of NIH funded principal investigators nationwide (out of 43,977 PIs). Numbers in parentheses reflect rankings among public schools of medicine.
