Little girl on the cover of the UNC Children's 2020 Strategic Plan

In 2002, for the first time ever, pediatric services at UNC were provided out of a single state-of-the-art facility, the UNC Children’s Hospital. Located on the UNC medical campus in Chapel Hill, NC, the Children’s Hospital allows the Department to provide complete inpatient and outpatient care for children in one location, a true children’s hospital.

As it has for more than 50 years, the Department’s faculty continues to concentrate on three primary focuses:

  • Providing high-quality clinical care to sick children;
  • Pioneering cutting-edge research aimed at developing the treatments and cures of the future; and
  • Educating and training tomorrow’s pediatricians in the highly specialized arts and sciences of providing medical care to children.

After a thoughtful and thorough strategic planning process, the Department of Pediatrics is well-positioned to achieve great success in each core mission area. These initiatives will serve as a roadmap for future planning, and a detailed timeframe and set of metrics will serve to measure its progress.
