Laura Ornelas, Ph.D., will be joining the University of New Mexico in August 2024 as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology. Dr. Ornelas is part of an early-career research faculty cohort hired through the UNM Faculty Institutional Recruitment for Sustainable Transformation (FIRST) program, which is funded by a NIH FIRST grant. The FIRST Program aims to recruit diverse faculty with a strong commitment to promoting diversity and inclusive excellence in the biomedical fields of neuroscience.
Dr. Ornelas received a K99/R00 MOSAIC Award while at the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies and will be continuing this work at UNM, focusing on the neurobiology of alcohol use disorders and PTSD. Dr. Ornelas completed her postdoctoral training under the mentorship of Dr. Joyce Besheer, Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Associate Director of the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies.
