Dr. Carol Dannenhoffer, a postdoctoral fellow at the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies, started a new position as a program coordinator with UNC’s Chancellor’s Science Scholars (CSS) earlier this month. Dr. Dannenhoffer will serve as a mentor to talented undergraduate students pursuing careers in research, most of whom are from backgrounds historically excluded from STEM. CSS provides professional development training and academic coaching for emerging scholars to support the beginning of their careers in STEM, while challenging the preconceptions of the scientist archetype. CSS is dedicated to cultivating an inclusive and diverse community that fosters a sense of belonging and support with peers who will carry these bonds through their time at UNC and throughout their STEM careers. Dr. Dannenoffer will contribute to the intensive mentorship and support provided at CSS to enrich the student experience and pave the way for future academic and professional success among the next generation of leaders in science and technology. While at BCAS, Dr. Dannenhoffer was mentored by Dr. Donita Robinson, Associate Dean for Graduate Education in the UNC School of Medicine and Education & Outreach Director at the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies.
