Title: Iron-sensitive RNA regulation during erythropoiesis
PI: Maria Aleman PhD (Pharmacology); Co-investigators: Raj Kasthuri, MD (Medicine), Daniel Dominguez, PhD (Pharmacology)

PROJECT NARRATIVE Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficit worldwide and the #1 cause of anemia. The primary goal of this proposal is to define mechanisms by which iron modulates the activity of a family of RNA binding proteins which double as intracellular iron chaperones. This research program is highly relevant to public health because it will uncover basic mechanisms that become dysregulated with iron deficiency.
