COVID-19 is associated with derangements in biomarkers of coagulation and endothelial cell function and has been likened to abnormalities seen in sepsis. Emma Bouck and Alisa Wolberg, PhD collaborated with investigators at the University of Utah to show that both COVID-19 and sepsis are associated with activation of mechanisms that promote clot formation and clot breakdown, but also uncovered key differences in these diseases. Their work suggests the dysregulation of these pathways may uniquely contribute to sepsis and COVID-19.
