About 200 7’th graders engaged with over 30 UNC faculty and residents, UNC medical students, and local EMS clinicians during their visit.

The Department of Emergency Medicine’s residency program participants and faculty recently paid a very special visit to A.L. Stanback middle school in Hillsborough, N.C. to teach students about common emergency conditions.

Lead by Ms. Julianne Cyr, Dr. Maglin Halsey-Nichols, and Dr. Collyn Murray, this “Middle School Med Day” is part of a local community outreach program designed to teach students about health, promote excitement about careers in medicine, and engage our healthcare providers with the community they serve.

Topics and activities were chosen to complement both the 7th grade N.C. Standard Course of Study and the skill sets of Emergency Medicine clinicians.

Examples of topics and activities included stroke identification, recognizing anaphylaxis and use of epi pens, checking vital signs, exploring prehospital care, and “Stop the Bleed” certification.
