Forgivable Educational Loans for Service (FELS)

The FELS program is administered by the NC General Assembly and is designed to provide financial support for “qualified students enrolled in an approved education program and committed to working in critical employment shortage professions in North Carolina.”

Occupational therapy is among the critical shortage professions in NC, and Masters degree students are eligible for up to $10,000/year. You must be a NC resident to qualify for this program. For more information and instructions on how to apply, please go to:

https://www.cfnc.org/pay-for-college/apply-for-financial-aid/forgivable-education-loans-for-service/

For 2024, applications opened on January 16 and the deadline is March 1. All completed applications will be put into a lottery system and recipients will be chosen randomly. The number of FELS awards given depends on the total amount of funding available at the time of the awards.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The Office of Scholarships & Student Aid handles the application process for Federal Financial Aid. Only one application is required for graduate and professional students: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available at fafsa.gov, UNC code 002974.

Submit the FAFSA on or before March 1st. Late applications are accepted, but the sooner you apply, the more aid might be available. Do not wait to hear if you have been admitted to apply for aid. You can file the forms during the application period and activate the Financial Aid application once admitted to the program.

In rare circumstances, additional information will be requested from you prior to determining eligibility. For any additional questions regarding financial aid, call the office at (919) 962-8396 or email aidinfo@unc.edu.
