The University of North Carolina and the UNC Kidney Center appreciate your interest in our combined Med-Peds Nephrology training program. The Med-Peds Nephrology Fellowship provides comprehensive subspecialty clinical and research training in both pediatric and adult patients with kidney disease. The program consists of four years of training, designed to complete the ACGME requirements for both adult and pediatric nephrology. The program directors will petition the ABIM and ABP on your behalf so that, upon completion of the 4 years of training, you will be anticipated to be eligible to sit for both the adult and pediatric subspecialty board exams.

Please review further information about the categorical Adult Nephrology and Pediatric Nephrology programs. Of course, we also enthusiastically welcome Med-Peds trained residents into either of the categorical programs, should the combined training not align with your career goals.

Typical Schedule

Year 1: Clinical training in adult nephrology, while maintaining a continuity clinic with both adult and pediatric patients.

Year 2: Clinical training in pediatric nephrology, while maintaining a continuity clinic with both adult and pediatric patients (at times, by mutual agreement, the order of the adult and pediatric clinical years may be reversed).

Years 3 and 4: Primary focus on development of expertise in either research methodology (basic, translational, or clinical), policy and advocacy, or quality improvement. Between 10% to 25% of your time will be devoted to clinical care of patients. Many fellows choose to pursue an MPH in Epidemiology or an MS in Clinical Research during this time with the top-ranked UNC School of Public Health; other fellows pursue other formal skill development opportunities tailored to their career goals.
