Dr. Don Budenz, Chair of UNC Ophthalmology, recently completed a mission trip to Ghana, West Africa, to examine patients and perform glaucoma surgery. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. The highest incidence of glaucoma in the world is in West Africa.

Dr. Kathy Whitfield, Assistant Professor of Pediatric Ophthalmology, recently served as a visiting professor at the Tianjin Eye Hospital in Tianjin, China. Dr. Whitfield was also a speaker at the 2019 Tianjin International Ophthalmology Forum. Dr. Whitfield is pictured with colleague Grace Prakalapakorn, M.D., from Duke, and local ophthalmology students.
