Brian Gilger, DVM, a professor on loan from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, received a check for $30,000 from the National MPS Society to advance a research collaboration with Matthew Hirsch, Ph.D., of UNC Ophthalmology.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness that damages the eye’s optic nerve. Those at risk include individuals over the age of 40, those who have a family member with glaucoma, and people of African American, Hispanic, or Asian heritage. Nearly three million people in the U.S. have glaucoma. UNC Ophthalmology has a team of board-certified ophthalmologists who diagnose and treat glaucoma. Drs. Gao and Mitra of the Han Lab at UNC Eye had their article, Developing Nanoceria-Based pH-Dependent Cancer-Directed Drug Delivery System for Retinoblastoma, accepted for publication in the recent issue of Advanced Functional Materials, a highly-respected journal in chemical materials science. Their project is supported by grant funding from Carolina Centers of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence (CCNE).
