UNC Ophthalmology third-year residents Dr. Lee Moore and Dr. Mike Taggart accompanied UNC faculty member Dr. Ken Cohen to San Jose de los Llanos, a rural province of the Dominican Republic, to provide eye care to local residents. They examined 500 patients and performed 110 surgeries, assisting citizens who have minimal access to vision care. The week-long trip was organized by the Hawaiian Eye Foundation.

Residents and faculty from UNC, Duke, Wake Forest and the Medical University of South Carolina gathered at the Miracles in Sight Surgical Skills lab on the UNC campus in March to participate in the Advanced Anterior Segment Surgical Course. Hosted by UNC Ophthalmology faculty member Dr. Ken Cohen, the course offered residents the opportunity to learn and practice eight different surgical skills from corneal suturing to use of the femto laser.

UNC Ophthalmology Chair Don Budenz, M.D., M.P.H., and Chief Resident Chris Hwang, M.D., traveled to Capitol Hill to visit with Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) to advocate for increased funding for the National Institutes of Health and the National Eye Institute.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness that damages the eye’s optic nerve. Those at risk include individuals over the age of 40, those who have a family member with glaucoma, and people of African American, Hispanic, or Asian heritage.
