Dr. Kathy Whitfield Named UNC Kittner Eye Center Medical Director

UNC Ophthalmology is pleased to recognize Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology Dr. Kathy Whitfield as the new Medical Director of UNC Kittner Eye Center. A subspecialist in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus, Dr. Whitfield takes on her new role as Medical Director effective May 1, 2018.

UNC Eye residents Kyle Huynh, M.D. and Lee Moore, M.D. traveled with Ken Cohen, M.D., to the Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology, Hanoi, to teach local ophthalmologists new surgical procedures.

More than 30 ophthalmology residents participated in the Advanced Anterior Segment Surgical Course at UNC in February. The course featured nine speakers and provided hands-on training.

Dr. Donald Budenz, Kittner Family Distinguished Professor and Chair of UNC Ophthalmology, was selected to present the American Glaucoma Society’s Clinician-Scientist Lecture at their annual meeting held in New York in February.

Dr. Budenz’s lecture, delivered to an international audience of more than 1,500 AGS members, was entitled Glaucoma at the Center of the Earth. His lecture included results of his landmark study of the prevalence and incidence of glaucoma in West Africa.
