The UNC Hospitals Molecular Genetics Laboratory provides outstanding, patient-centered diagnostic services in germline and somatic molecular genetics, with expertise in inherited disorders, hematologic malignancies, and solid tumors. Our team performs molecular testing technologies, including next-generation sequencing, PCR-based testing, and targeted genotyping to deliver high-quality, clinically actionable results in support of precision medicine. The laboratory collaborates closely with clinical genetics, oncology, hematopathology, and other specialties, serving as an essential partner in multidisciplinary patient care.
Training future leaders in molecular diagnostics is at the heart of what we do. In addition to supporting resident and medical student education, we provide hands-on training and case-based learning for Pathology residents and fellows in Molecular Genetic Pathology and Laboratory Genetics and Genomics. Trainees gain experience with a diverse case mix, cutting-edge molecular platforms, and the complexities of test development, validation, and result interpretation. Our faculty are actively engaged in translational research and quality improvement initiatives, fostering innovation that bridges clinical care and scientific discovery.
