Hickman and Raffa Named 2026 TraCS K12 Scholars
Elise Hickman, PhD, in the Curriculum in Toxicology & Environmental Medicine working with Dr. Megan Rebuli in Pediatric Allergy/Immunology, and Brittany Raffa, MD, Assistant Professor in General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, have been named 2026 CTSA K12 Scholars as part of the Gene Orringer Junior Faculty Career Development Program (TraCS K12). BRAINY‑T1D: Advancing Our Understanding of How Early Type 1 Diabetes Shapes the Developing Brain
BRAINY-T1D is a nationwide effort aimed at understanding the earliest effects of Type 1 Diabetes in young children. UNC is one of eleven campuses participating in this NIH project. At UNC, the study is led by an interdisciplinary group of investigators whose expertise spans neuroimaging, endocrinology, pediatrics, occupational therapy and pediatric neuropsychology.

Bauserman Elected Member of American Pediatric Society
Melissa Bauserman, MD, MPH, Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, has been elected to the American Pediatric Society (APS), North America’s first and most prestigious academic pediatric organization. The society recognizes distinguished academic leaders, educators, and researchers whose contributions have earned national and international acclaim.

Brittany Raffa, MD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of General Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, has been nominated to participate in the APS SPR Journeys & Frontiers in Pediatric Research program for 2025-2026.
