Amputee Rehabilitation
Program & Goals
UNC PM&R’s Amputee Rehabilitation Program provides each patient with an individualized treatment protocol based on a comprehensive evaluation by expert professionals and through a network of clinical and technical resources. Our goal is to maximize each patient’s independence and quality of life, and to help the patient regain a productive and rewarding lifestyle.
Pre- and Post-Prosthetic Programs
- Promote healing
- Ensure prosthetic fit
- Improve strength, endurance and range of motion
- Facilitate independence at home and in the community
- Provide education to the patient and family, including proper prosthesis use and coping skills
- Decrease sensitivity and pain as needed
Integrated Care Model
Our physiatrists develop and oversee an individualized care plan for each patient which is implemented by our team of rehabilitation professionals. Our services are available to patients in need of amputee rehabilitation during acute hospitalization at UNC Hospitals, at the UNC Health Care Rehabilitation Center or our sub-acute rehabilitation at UNC-Rex.
After discharge from the hospital, we continue rehabilitation care, education, research and advocacy in our outpatient clinic and through our community outreach programs.
