North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center

The Learn-Not-to-Burn® Pre-School Program is a practical pilot-tested and evaluated program to teach fire safety awareness and skills to children ages 3-5 in a child care center. The program is available in English and in Spanish.

The program uses songs and play activities to emphasize specific fire safety knowledge and actions. Its objective is to help pre-schoolers identify key fire safety behaviors:

  • Stay away from hot things that can hurt
  • Tell an adult when you find matches or lighters
  • Stop, drop and roll if your clothes catch on fire
  • Cool a burn
  • Crawl low under smoke
  • Know the sound of a smoke alarm
  • Practice an Escape Plan
  • Recognize the fire fighter as a Helper
