For People with Disabilities

More than 43 million Americans have a disability, and their impairments make it important to have a detailed fire escape plan. Here are some fire safety tips tips for people with disabilities:

  • Most fire deaths happen in a home, so create a fire escape plan and practice the plan at least twice a year. Plan for anyone with a disability and plan around such disabilities.
  • Make sure there are two ways out of every room and every building.
  • Designate a safe meeting place in front of the home.
  • If there is a fire or smoke, call 911, the fire emergency number  or the TTY-equipped 911 center from a neighbor’s phone or a cell phone.
  • Ask your fire department to review your plan. Some departments have voluntary registeries for people who may need extra assistance or may need to shelter in place.
  • Keep a phone by your bed in case you become trapped.
  • Install properly functioning smoke alarms.
