Fellowship Overview
The UNC Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery fellowship provides a comprehensive and unique training experience in reconstructive urology, with a focus on open and robotic repair of ureteral, bladder neck and urethral stenoses/fistulas; genital skin deficiency due to trauma, infection and cancer. Fellows benefit from a diverse faculty, whose backgrounds include reconstructive urology, uro-oncology, and plastic surgery.

Associate Professor of Urology and Plastic Surgery
Program Director, Fellowship in Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Figler’s practice focuses on genital and lower urinary tract reconstruction. Areas of expertise include male and female urethral strictures, lichen sclerosus, genital skin deficiency, buried penis, hidradenitis, urinary fistulas, and genital malignancies. Dr. Figler completed his residency training at Emory University and his fellowship training at University of Washington with Hunter Wessells. Before joining UNC in 2016, he was Director of Reconstructive Urology at Thomas Jefferson University.

Dr. Bjurlin’s practice focuses on urologic oncology and minimally-invasive surgery of the urinary tract, including robotic management of uretero-enteric strictures, bladder neck and post-prostatectomy anastomotic strictures, fistulas, and robotic-assisted inguinal lymph node dissections for cancer.

Dr. Raynor’s clinical interests include minimally-invasive surgery of the urinary tract, including robotic reconstruction for ureteral strictures.

Dr. Borawski’s practice focuses on female urology, urodynamics, neurourology, reconstructive surgery, female/male incontinence.
Assistant Professor (Plastic Surgery/Urology)
Director of Transgender Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery
Dr Ogunleye is a plastic surgeon with training and interest in complex oncologic microvascular surgery. His practice focuses on head-to-toe cancer reconstruction, particularly genitourinary reconstruction. His team is one of a few at academic centers in the United States with experience in penile reconstruction with free flap phalloplasty. His other areas of expertise include surgical management of secondary lymphedema after cancer treatment, neurotization of flap reconstruction as well as biodesign innovation.
Application and Selection Process
For the 2025-2026 fellowship year, we will be participating in the GURS match.
Please note, all applicants must be a US citizen or hold a valid US immigration VISA that permits employment in the United States. The UNC Department of Urology does not provide sponsorship for any type of immigration VISA.
