Chief Financial Officer (CFO), UNC School of Medicine Vice Dean for Finance and Business Operations

Karlina Matthews, MBA, is the UNC School of Medicine’s Chief Financial Officer and Vice Dean for Finance and Business Operations. 

Karlina leads the financial functions for the UNC School of Medicine across its mission areas of education, research and clinical care. She also is responsible for developing and implementing financial strategies that align with the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Health strategic plans.  

She oversees budget planning, forecasting and monitoring, ensuring effective resource allocation and financial accountability. Additionally, Karlina provides leadership and direction in the management of School of Medicine administrative functions, including human resources, information technology, research administration, facilities, professional service contracts and more. She also serves as a key advisor to the Executive Dean and other senior leaders, offering guidance related to finance, administration and strategic planning.  

Karlina has been with the School of Medicine since 2002. Across her focus areas, she works to foster a culture of team building, collaboration and continuous improvement. This work was acknowledged in 2022 when she was awarded the Outstanding Encouragement of Learning and Development Award from UNC-Chapel Hill’s Office of Human Resources.
