UNC Procedure Clinic

The UNC Otolaryngology Procedure Clinic is an in-office procedure service at UNC Main Campus Otolaryngology Clinic in the Neurosciences Hospital. Dr. Trevor Hackman started the Otolaryngology Procedure Clinic in 2013 and currently offers this monthly outpatient procedure clinic on the third Thursday of each month.

The following procedures are available under local anesthesia:

  • In-office Sialendoscopy and Sialolithotomy
  • Ultrasound guided procedures – insert images
  • Biopsy – thyroid, neck and salivary glands
  • Botox injections
  • Salivary Glands – Sialorrhea, Salivary Fistula, Sialadenitis
  • TMJ Disorder
  • Skin lesion excisions
  • Scar Revisions
  • Removal of superificial neck masses
  • Core Needle Biopsies
  • TEP insertion for laryngectomy patients
  • Subglottic stenosis treatment with endoscopic guided Kenalog injections
  • Laser Uvulectomy for snoring
  • Laser resurfacing for oral cavity lesions

Dr. Hackman has personally performed hundreds of these procedures under local anesthesia. As no sedation is given on the procedure day, patients may arrive for their procedure time without any special preparation, dietary restrictions, or need for a separate driver. It is recommended that patients avoid NSAIDs, aspirin, Plavix or other blood thinners 5 days prior to the appointment, unless otherwise cleared by Dr. Hackman himself.

Appointment times range from 20 to 90 minutes, but vary based on the procedure being performed. Dr. Hackman prefers to meet patients in clinic first in consultation to assess the patient’s candidacy for the procedure clinic, as not all cases are appropriate for the office setting. For example, patients, who easily faint or become lightheaded with blood donation, are unlikely to be recommended for the procedure clinic. After the initial office consultation, your procedure date will be scheduled for the next available slot, which may be a month later.

All procedures are performed within the Minor Procedure Room (MPR) located in the Otolaryngology outpatient clinic in the Neurosciences Hospital on the Main UNC Hospital Campus. As the room is hospital-based procedure room, there is a separate facility fee for the procedure, beyond the procedural cost.
