Pre-Surgery Instructions

  • A pre-OP appointment is typically required. This appointment will take place at the Neurosciences Hospital office. It will include a careful review of your chart, necessary blood work and x-rays, and a consultation with an anesthesiologist. For some patients, this requirement can be lifted if no other medical conditions are present and/or the patient has certain transportation requirements.
  • You will be contacted the day prior to your scheduled surgery with the exact time and details.  Our surgery schedulers and clinic representatives will not have access to this information and you will need to direct any related questions to pre-care.
      • Pre-care Hospital: 984-974-0250
      • Pre-care Ambulatory Surgical Center: 984-974-5906
  • Most voice surgeries can be performed as outpatient procedures. An overnight stay is typically offered as it typically provides adequate care (pain control, frequent checkups, monitoring) for the first night following surgery. Larger surgeries will require a hospital stay.
  • Please bring a family member or friend to your surgery.
  • Please follow the NPO (nothing per mouth) instructions carefully. Specifically, do NOT eat or drink for at least 8 hours before your scheduled surgery time. Clear liquids (water) can be used for up to 2 hours before surgery.
  • Please make sure you are familiar with the location of your surgery:
    • UNC Hospitals – Main Hospital
    • Ambulatory Surgical Center at the UNC ASC. Separate parking on site available.
  • Please check in 2 hours before your scheduled surgery time. This is important as it allows the staff to check you in properly. Also, your surgeon, the anesthesia team, as well as the nursing staff will talk to you to make sure all your needs can be met.
  • Please check your medications with your physician. Please take your regular medications and bring them with you. Avoid the following:
    • Aspirin (at least 7 days before surgery and if deemed acceptable by Primary Care Provider or Cardiologist)
    • Coumadin (if deemed acceptable by Primary Care Provider or Cardiologist)
    • Plavix (if deemed acceptable by Primary Care Provider or Cardiologist)
    • Ibuprofen
    • Fish oil
    • Aleve
    • Advil
    • Motrin
    • Viagra
  • Billing: surgical procedures typically do generate several bills. Specifically, you will most likely receive bills from your physician, the facility (hospital), and the anesthesia department. In some cases, you will also receive a bill from pathology.
  • Please communicate any concerns with us. Numbers will be provided.
