Shadow A Scientist 2024Multiple graduate students from the Curriculum in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and the Curriculum in Genetics and Molecular Biology generously volunteered their time and expertise for a recent Shadow a Scientist Outreach outreach event on March 22, 2024.

Shadow A Scientist (SAS), brings high school students to UNC Chapel Hill’s campus for a day to shadow scientists in their respective labs. High school students are split into small groups of 2-4 and paired with a scientist at UNC. In addition to the shadow sessions, high school students chat in small groups with scientists during lunch. In total, this requires ~40 ambassador volunteers each event day.

This program highlights the opportunity for students of all backgrounds to become a researcher and break down barriers and myths that currently prevent young students from populations historically underrepresented in the sciences from pursuing science.

The program also encourages students to explore new research fields to develop their awareness of the incredible science that is all around them.
