The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill is a one-year ACGME-accredited training program under the supervision of Program Director Joseph S. Rossi, MD, MSCI, FACC, FSCAI.

The interventional cardiology fellowship accepts three outstanding candidates per year for 12 months of intensive coronary and peripheral interventional training. There is a separate one-year non-ACGME-accredited Structural Heart Disease Fellowship under the directorship of John P. Vavalle, MD, MHS, FACC designed to be completed following interventional cardiology training and accepts one applicant per year.

The primary objective of the interventional cardiology fellowship is to train fellows to become safe and fully independent interventional cardiologists by providing excellent clinical training with exposure to all facets of interventional cardiology and instilling in them a deep appreciation of the literature supporting interventional practice and the data underpinning current guidelines.

When the North Carolina Memorial Hospital opened in 1952, cardiac catheterization was an emerging and often dramatic diagnostic method. The physicians within the UNC Cardiology division adhered to the very highest procedural standards in order to provide the best outcomes for their patients.

Today, with its fully renovated, state-of-the-art facilities, the UNC Cardiac Catheterization Lab is primed to drive the academic and clinical excellence of the trainees in the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship.
