We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Jude Samuski is awarded as an Alumni Distinguished Professor, effective immediately on July 1st of 2023.

The Alumni Distinguished Professorships, established in 1961, are a symbol of recognition and gratitude towards the exceptional faculty members who have profoundly impacted the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and its students. These professorships are made possible by the generous contributions of the University’s alumni. These gifts enable the University to appreciate top-tier talent like Dr. Samuski.

With over 40 years of extraordinary work in gene therapy and the development of novel AAV vectors in pharmacology, Dr. Samulski has been a trailblazer in his field. Pioneering the use of AAV vectors and continuously pushing the boundaries for four decades, he has transformed AAV into a powerful gene delivery system, offering hope for treating various diseases. Notably, his groundbreaking efforts led to the first U.S. Patent for inserting genes into AAV, with even more AAV commercialization on the horizon.

Such accomplishments have earned Dr. Samulski well-deserved recognition on the international stage. The European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy honored him with the inaugural Founder’s Award, acknowledging his significant impact on the field. Additionally, Endpoints News named him one of the 20 Most Influential Biopharma R&D Executives, a testament to his influential contributions in gene therapy research. Notably, he was also recognized with the prestigious Sune Bergström award for his outstanding dedication to advancing gene therapy.

We wholeheartedly congratulate Dr. Jude Samulski on this well-deserved recognition. His remarkable achievements serve as a powerful inspiration to all members of our department, fueling our drive for excellence and instilling a sense of purpose in making a positive impact on society through our work!
