The Tar Heel Tour Bus is an annual tradition at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) that takes Carolina faculties and senior administrators on a journey to North Carolina’s diverse communities. Mike and Alan, along with their bus mates, aimed to identify opportunities for engaged scholarship and service, emphasize collaboration with communities to address their specific needs, and ultimately forge a sense of community and encourage interdisciplinary connections among participants. Reflecting on his experiences during the Tar Heel Bus Tour, Michael Emanuele shared, “meeting people from all across the state and hearing about how they are building communities, facing challenges, and working together was truly remarkable.”

In an interview with the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, he went on to emphasize the impact of the tour, stating, “our stops highlighted the incredible work being done by various groups and individuals around the state, often in collaboration with UNC. This includes initiatives such as delivering healthcare to individuals in rural areas, aiding in the revitalization of communities impacted by job losses, and contributing to the education of future leaders.”
