Helping individuals find work

Individuals with serious mental illness who want to work are eligible to participate in the Center’s supported employment program. As a Dartmouth Research Site, the Center has an evidence-based program to assist individuals with serious mental illness to find and to maintain a job.The Center is one of three North Carolina sites selected to participate in North Carolina’s Individual Placement and Support (IPS) supported employment initiative.

Criteria for participation:

  • Individuals must be at least 16 years of age and older with an Axis I mental health diagnosis (SPMI) may participate at any stage of their recovery.
  • The program currently serves individuals in Orange and Chatham counties and is expanding.

The IPS model by passes traditional pre-employment assessment and training. With assistance from IPS-trained employment specialists, Center clients decide what type of work they want to do. Employment specialists make the employee-employer connection and provide additional support to help individuals with employment issues as they continue working.

The program collaborates with the North Carolina Divisions of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services and Vocational Rehabilitation.
