Interview Process

Carolina Inn at Night

The interview visit is planned to be as informative and pleasant as possible. Because we recognize the personal expense and effort involved in your coming to Chapel Hill for an interview, we organize the day so that you, the faculty, and our residents will learn enough about each other to make an informed decision about your residency choice.

Applicants will stay at the beautiful Carolina Inn on the UNC campus as a special part of their interview experience. The evening before your interview, you will be invited to attend an informal Chair's reception where you will have the opportunity to meet the Department Chair, faculty members and residents. Following the reception you will spend the rest of the evening having dinner and getting to know our residents at a local restaurant in Chapel Hill.

Day of Interview

On the morning of the interview, you will be picked up by your host residents to go on an informal tour of the town and campus. Later that morning you will meet and spend time with our residents and other faculty members. The interview team is composed of physicians who have trained and lived in many parts of the country. Its members include:

Dr. David A. Zvara, Professor and Chair
Department of Anesthesiology

Dr. Harendra Arora, Professor and Vice Chair of Education
Department of Anesthesiology
Program Director, Resident Education

Dr. Susan M. Martinelli, Associate Professor

Associate Program Director, Resident Education

Dr. Kathleen A. Smith, Associate Professor

Dr. Kimberley R. Nichols, Assistant Professor
Department of Anesthesiology
Assistant Program Director, Resident Education

Dr. Peggy P. McNaull, Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Patient Safety and Quality Improvement

On the interview day, your host residents will introduce you to other members of the housestaff and take you on a tour of our institution. At noon, you will join some of our residents for lunch. These residents are part of the Selection Committee, and their input and opinions carry equal weight with those of faculty members.  Your interview day will finish up with a brief wrap-up and final words from the interview team. We make every effort to provide you with all the necessary information about our program and answer any questions you may have during your visit. We hope your experience at UNC is a memorable one that shows all the great qualities our program and institution offers.
