UNC Sports Medicine Fellowship

The University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship utilizes the extensive local, regional and national resources of The University of North Carolina and our many affiliated institutional, faculty and staff partners to provide an unsurpassed breadth and depth of Sports Medicine training to physicians from non-surgical specialty backgrounds, preparing our fellows for success in whatever career path they elect to pursue. Excellence in academics, patient care and service to the community (not to mention athletics!) are core to our program, which is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and housed within the UNC Department of Family Medicine.
In addition to longitudinal experiences in the fellow’s primary specialty, our program provides extensive clinical experience in Sports Medicine, Orthopaedics and related fields. Fellows work in diverse clinical environments (academic, private, Campus Health, general and sub-specialty practices) and with athletes and teams of all levels (recreational, club, high school, collegiate, professional and international). We have a robust formal and informal musculoskeletal ultrasound curriculum through which our fellows develop a high level of skill using point-of-care ultrasound for diagnosis and procedural guidance, with high volume exposure to advanced procedures, including orthobiologics. Teaching and research opportunities are plentiful and our fellows attend and present at national conferences annually. Beyond Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic physicians, fellows work with and learn from Radiologists, athletic trainers, physical therapists, cast technicians, strength and conditioning coaches, sports dietitians, sports administrators and many others across our partner sites.
We pride ourselves on maintaining a close-knit, collegial and supportive environment while providing academically rigorous training and immersive educational experiences. Graduates of our program have built very successful careers across a broad range of practice environments from community practice to academic positions, primary care oriented roles to specialty and procedure-focused practices. Several of our graduates serve as Team Physicians for NCAA Division I institutions and work with other high-level sports teams and organizations.
The UNC Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. It is the mission of UNC Health to improve the health and well-being of North Carolinians and others whom we serve, regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, religious beliefs, economic/insurance status, immigration status or other factors. We proudly align with those values and are dedicated to service for all within our community, demonstrated throughout the year through compassionate care and multiple service-oriented projects.
