History

In 2009, six national health professions schools formed the interprofessional collaborative to encourage efforts to advance interprofessional education (IPE) and realistic learning opportunities. The primary goal was, and continues to be, helping prepare health professionals of all disciplines to provide quality patient care through interprofessional teamwork.

In 2011, the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) published four core competencies to guide IPE. These competencies were updated in 2016 by IPEC to reaffirm the importance of the competencies and sub-competencies in education and training, to organize the competencies into a single area of influence, interprofessional collaboration, in order to include ethics, values, roles and responsibilities, communication, and teamwork for interprofessional care. The revision also allowed for greater emphasis on patient care, improving health for all, and reducing health care costs. It also outlines Core Competencies for interprofessional collaboration.
