HTC FAQs
Comprehensive care takes time. Please plan for 2-3 hours for your appointment as you may meet with several providers depending on your individual needs.
For routine follow-up visits, we recommend calling at least 1-2 months ahead of your expected appointment date. For urgent needs, please call the center directly.
Many factors will determine how often you will need to be seen at the HTC. Please ask your during your visit or call the center at 919-966-4736.
Please bring a record of any medication you have taken (infusion log, calendar, etc), factor or other medication, and any forms needing hematologist signature. You may also want to bring any braces or orthotics you use regularly.
It is very important to contact the HTC for all injuries, bleeding questions or concerns. A nurse or doctor is available at all times of the day and night.
Monday-Friday 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM call the HTC at 919-966-4736.
After Hours/Weekends/Holidays: call the UNC hospital operator at 984-974-1000 and ask to speak with the pediatric or adult hematologist on call.
For life threatening concerns, please call 911. For all other incidents please call the center directly or the after-hours line for guidance and plan to proceed to the nearest emergency room.
Please call the HTC first thing the next business day, in the morning, to update the center and receive further guidance.
Please notify the HTC that you are planning any surgery or procedure as soon as possible. It is important that your surgical/dental team is aware of your bleeding disorder. This ensures the highest level of safety and planning to prevent bleeding. Every person’s needs are different, and each procedure may require a different plan. Allow for at least 2 weeks for planning to ensure you and your provider have everything you need.

Please call the HTC to notify what form you are needing assistance with. You will be provided with the best way to send the form based on its needs. Please allow at least 2 weeks for all forms to be completed.
Anyone with a bleeding disorder should always wear a medical ID. Please call the center to request the application. There may be resources available to assist with the cost.
You should plan to wear your medical ID, travel with your emergency room and travel letters, and any medication/supplies you may need for bleeding. Please call the center to ensure you have all you need for safe travel or additional questions.
We encouraged all individuals with a bleeding disorder to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Please contact the UNC HTC physical therapist for guidance for how your specific bleeding disorder may impact safe participation in the activity you are interested in.
