Thyroid nodules are extremely common. While the majority are benign, in some cases the size, clinical features, or ultrasound feature(s) of the nodule warrant a thyroid biopsy.

In our Thyroid Nodule Clinic, patients receive a full clinic visit to evaluate their nodule(s), and if appropriate, are offered a biopsy on the same day. The biopsy is performed under ultrasound guidance in our dedicated Thyroid Ultrasound Suite within the Eastowne Endocrinology Clinic. An expert attending, together with an endocrine fellow, staff the clinic.

Nodules that are small (<1.5 cm), low risk by ultrasound (TI-RADS category 1 or 2), or associated with abnormal thyroid hormone levels (TSH < 0.3 mIU/L OR > 8 mIU/L) may be scheduled into our General Endocrine Clinic. In some cases, an E-consult may be suggested. Learn more: What is a thyroid nodule?

How can I be referred for a thyroid nodule?

See our Refer a Patient page.

What information is required before I can be scheduled?

In most cases, we only need a TSH lab test result and a thyroid ultrasound report to triage and schedule you for a visit.

I have a lot of questions about the thyroid biopsy. How should I prepare, how is it performed, and what is the follow up?
