Anemia Clinic

The Anemia Clinic provides treatment for patients with kidney disease who have anemia. Regular labwork is done and medication is given by injection every 2 to 4 weeks for management of anemia which is common in kidney disease. Your kidney doctor or provider will refer you to this clinic if needed.

Chronic Kidney Disease Clinic

UNC CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) Clinic provides education and information for patients and their families about chronic kidney disease, including what causes CKD, ways to slow the progression of CKD, recommended dietary changes and sample kidney-friendly recipes, and treatment options for kidney failure such as dialysis and kidney transplant. This education is provided by a nurse practitioner at the ACC Nephrology clinic and at our Burlington Nephrology clinic. It serves as a supplement to your kidney doctor’s care. Any issues, concerns, and decision making will be shared directly with your kidney doctor.

Kidney Transplant Outreach Clinic

The UNC Kidney Center provides an outreach clinic on Fridays to areas across North Carolina and one site in Virginia to provide kidney transplant education classes and pre-transplant evaluation appointments for patients.

A transplant nephrologist and a nurse practitioner travel to one of the following sites for these outreach clinics: Asheville, Wilmington, Rocky Mount, Raleigh/Rex, and Danville, Virginia.


Multidisciplinary Stone Clinic

UNC’s multidisciplinary Kidney Stone Clinic is designed to improve kidney stone treatment, prevention and research outcomes particularly for high risk individuals. Patients are evaluated in the same clinic session from the initial diagnosis to the completion of a treatment plan by dedicated clinicians from the Department of Urology, Division of Nephrology and Nutritional Services. Using targeted dietary and medication recommendations, patients are followed based on a personalized comprehensive strategy to minimize stone recurrence.

Risk factors in patients that may particularly benefit from a multidisciplinary approach include (but not limited to):

  • Recurrent stone formers
  • Strong family history
  • Cystine / Uric acid stone composition
  • Urologic anatomic abnormality
  • Morbid obesity
  • Renal insufficiency
  • Solitary (functioning) kidney
  • History of chronic diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, bowel resection, or gastric bypass surgery
  • Skeletal /bone disease
  • Autoimmune disease (such as Sjogren’s syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis)

Dr. Christina Herrera of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Dr. Monica Reynolds of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at UNC’s School of Medicine have opened a joint nephrology / maternal-fetal medicine clinic to provide evidence-based, patient-centered,multidisciplinary care to reproductive women with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are currently pregnant or considering pregnancy.
