Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship

Program Mission Statement:

We seek to train pediatric hospitalists for the future of hospital medicine, creating leaders that deliver high quality, high value, patient- and family-centered care in academic and community environments while promoting health and equity among all children. The Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship at North Carolina Children’s Hospital is a two-year program that focuses on clinical experience, academic teaching, research and administrative skills.

Training:

Clinical training takes place primarily at North Carolina Children’s Hospital, recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals.” It is also a Level 1 pediatric trauma center, pediatric burn center, home of a prominent pediatric airway center and has full range of pediatric medical and surgical subspecialists.

Academics and teaching are integral parts of the program. Our pediatric hospitalists are members of the core teaching staff for University of North Carolina medical students and residents, through bedside rounding, daily teaching activities, and formal lectures for medical students and residents. In addition, fellows spearhead our division’s journal club, inpatient case reviews, and morbidity and mortality conferences.

Scholarly activity is expected and supported during this fellowship. The formal two-year curriculum integrates principles of evidence-based medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics, quality, medical manuscript writing and scientific presentation. A scholarly project is created through mentorship with a goal of publication and/or presentation as a graduation requirement. Trainees also receive education in patient safety and risk management, participate actively in administrative committees, and participate in quality improvement projects.
