Roscoe Bennett Gray Cowper, MD, Distinguished Visiting Professor

The Cowper Professorship was established in 1972 with a gift from the late Dr. Roscoe Bennett Gray Cowper. Dr. Cowper was a native of Williamston, North Carolina, who received his bachelor’s degree in Medicine from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1930. After receiving his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and completing his internship and residency training in Pennsylvania, he began practicing in Texas in 1934. He founded the Cowper Clinic and Hospital in Big Spring, Texas, in 1940. Dr. Cowper was a respected leader in the Texas medical professional community and in civic organizations. He established the Roscoe Bennett Gray Cowper, MD Distinguished Professorship in Surgery, the first named professorship in General Surgery, to support the UNC Department of Surgery and its scholarly endeavors.
