UNC Pediatric Surgery Raleigh Clinic

Surgeons in the Division of Pediatric Surgery provide services in Wake County at three different locations: WakeMed Hospital/WakeMed North, Rex Hospital, and at our “satellite office” in the city of Raleigh.  Our clinic recently relocated from the Six Forks Road location to 4414 Lake Boone Trail.   Appointments are available several days each week.  Primary care physicians can obtain urgent outpatient pediatric surgery consultations and inpatient consultations for children hospitalized at WakeMed or Rex Hospital by calling the office at any time.  A 24-hour a day, 7-day a week answering service is available.

WakeMed Hospital

WakeMed Hospital, located at 3000 New Bern Avenue in Raleigh, is a private, not-for-profit 515-bed facility.  It is a regional referral center, with a well-respected heart center and trauma center.  In addition, the Hospital has extensive facilities for the care of children.  At the Women’s Pavilion and Birthplace, over 4000 babies are delivered every year.  A baby undergoing surgery would typically be cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) by a team of neonatologists, in close cooperation with the pediatric surgeon and the child’s pediatrian.  WakeMed also has a 21-bed inpatient pediatric ward and a 6-bed pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) staffed by full-time pediatric intensivists (doctors who care for seriously-ill or injured children).  Both the NICU and PICU are currently undergoing expansion.

WakeMed is the first hospital in North Carolina with a dedicated pediatric emergency department, separate from the main emergency department. This 14-bed facility is decorated and staffed just for children, and allows them to be seen and evaluated in a setting that is quieter and less threatening than the typical emergency room. WakeMed also has a separate pediatric pre-op room, where children awaiting surgery can wait with their families, separate from the main pre-op holding area.

More information on WakeMed can be found at:  www.wakemed.org

Rex Hospital

Rex Hospital, located at 4420 Lake Boone Trail in Raleigh, is a private, not-for-profit 394-bed facility. The emergency department has undergone a recent expansion. The Rex Same Day Surgery Center is one of the busiest outpatient surgical facilities in the area and is equiped to provide peri-operative care for children undergoing outpatient surgical procedures, such as hernia repairs.  Rex Hospital also has an inpatient pediatric ward.  At the Rex Family Birth Center over 5000 babies are delivered each year.  Adjacent to the Birth Center is a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit staffed by in-house neonatologists 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
