Psychiatry Program and Clinic

 

 

Mission Statement:

Define and advance an understanding of the complex issues at the interface of psychiatry and law through excellence in education, research and evaluations.

 

Goals:

The Forensic Psychiatry Program and Clinic at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Medicine is a statewide and national resource for civil and criminal forensic assessments, expert testimony, forensic empirical research, and training/education in psychiatry and law. We:

  • Provide prompt, reliable, and credible forensic services by knowledgeable and highly-trained clinical staff.
  • Provide education and consultation to attorneys, legal professionals, and the mental health community about how expertise in psychiatry and psychology can be of assistance to them and the people they serve.
  • Contribute knowledge to cutting edge forensic issues by conducting empirical research at the interface of psychiatry and law.
  • Train psychiatrists and psychologists in the practice of conducting evidence-based assessments on forensic questions.

Forensic Psychiatry Service

The Forensic Psychiatry Service specializes in civil or criminal forensic mental health evaluations involving children, adolescents and families.  Our expertise also includes civil adult mental health issues.  The Service provides:

  • Competency Evaluations

  • Personal Injury Assessments

  • Juvenile Assessments

  • Disability Evaluations

  • Risk Assessments

  • Medical Malpractice Evaluations

  • Child Custody Evaluations

  • Psychiatric and Psychological Evaluations

In addition, the Service provides expert witness testimony, case reviews, and psychological consultation in court cases. Court Orders may be required for certain evaluations.  The Service does not accept cases where the primary concern is sexual or physical child abuse.  Sexual or physical abuse cases may be referred to the Program on Childhood Trauma and Maltreatment at 919-966-1760.
