The Division of Diagnostic Neuroradiology at UNC is staffed by six full-time neuroradiologists and is headed by Dr. Mauricio Castillo, current editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Neuroradiology, former president of the American Society of Neuroradiology, and current vice-president of the American Roentgen Ray Society. The Division of Vascular Neurointerventional Radiology, led by Dr. Sten Solander, consists of two dedicated neurointerventional radiologists who work in close concert with the Department of Neurosurgery. More information about the Neuroradiology Division can be found HERE.
Our fellowship is designed to produce knowledgeable, well-rounded neuroradiologists who will excel in meeting the demands of a busy clinical practice. Fellows rotate weekly through clinical services at the main hospital campus and at our outpatient imaging center, which provide dedicated exposure to all aspects of diagnostic neuroradiology, including brain imaging; pediatric neuroimaging; head, neck and spine imaging; and vascular interventional neuroradiology. During the second half of the year, our fellows also participate in a dedicated 3 week rotation in pain management and spinal intervention (in concert with the Department of Anesthesiology) and are allowed up to three weeks of electives. Weekly didactic conferences, as well as regular interdisciplinary conferences with the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Head and Neck Surgery, and Pathology augment the fellows’ reading room experience.
Fellows also receive a book and travel allowance at the beginning of each year. Salary is determined according to the year of postgraduate training. All fellows are allowed three weeks of vacation per year, an extra week off for Christmas/New Year, as well as up to one week away to attend a major meeting.
Alumni and alumnae of the program hold or have held academic positions at the Mayo Clinic, Medical College of Wisconsin, Medical University of South Carolina, Medical College of Georgia, University of Mississippi, University of Texas, Brooke Army Medical Center, Brown University, University of Cincinnati, Autonomous University of Madrid, and Val d'Hebron University Hospital of Barcelona.
