Faculty Affairs
As a department, we strive to promote a diverse, respectful environment where our colleagues can excel in the interrelated areas of patient care, education, and research. The Department of Radiology supports faculty development to assist the career advancement of all faculty by providing mentoring, education, and intentional career guidance.
These efforts include a formal faculty development and mentoring program for junior and mid-career faculty, identifying and encouraging appropriate faculty development opportunities, accumulating and making accessible useful information to promote workplace efficiency, and encouraging teaching and scholarly activities. Dr. Gandikota meets periodically with junior faculty to familiarize them with UNC’s promotions process, mentoring policy, and development opportunities.

The Radiology Mentoring series is a collaborative effort of J Keith Smith, MD, PhD and Weili Lin, PhD, to promote research among both clinical and Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC) faculty. Our mission is to strengthen research and promote collaboration among Radiology clinical and basic science faculty by providing mentorship and training opportunities, as well as to aid radiology faculty in the responsible conduct of clinical and translational research in a manner that is ethical and consistent with relevant laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
This series includes bi-monthly sessions covering various UNC School of Medicine research topics. In addition, we also showcase the work of our own faculty by asking our own faculty members to present their research. Topics covered during past and future talks include:
- Introduction to conducting Health Services Research
- Clinical Trials Quality Assurance and Billing
- Updates from the IRB
- Conflicts of Interest in Research Studies
- Introduction to Research for Early Investigators
- Designing a Research Study
