Since 1998, The Children’s Cochlear Implant Center at UNC has been a leader in training and coaching professionals and graduate students in the practice of Listening and Spoken Language therapy.  Through either LSL JUNCtion, the annual Carolina Summer Institute, or an individual coaching program, UNC’s five certified Listening and Spoken Language Specialists are able to provide professional training for those currently working in the field or those just beginning their career. All coaches are versed in the practices of Strengths-Based Coaching and use these techniques with all of our adult learners.

LSL JUNCtion is an eight-week online course designed to provide the basic knowledge, tools and resources in Listening and Spoken Language therapy. Participants explore the LSL topics through readings, videos, and weekly application assignments. In addition, a live online meeting is held weekly with an instructor. This course is approved for CEUs by ASHA and AG Bell.

Held each summer since 1998, The Carolina Summer Institute begins with our eight-week LSL JUNCtion classroom experience and then culminates with a week-long practicum experience either at our UNC clinic with UNC’s patient caseload or through an online practicum with participants using their own patient population. Participants will become highly versed conducting parent participation sessions with emphasis on adult learning theory and lesson planning.

For professionals interested in the process of certification for Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, or those who just want to get more comfortable in the practice of LSL therapy, individual coaching is also available.
