2021-2022 UNC Neuroradiology fellows
(L-R): Drs. Steven Edelman, Meredith Johnson, Peter Noone, Olutayo Olubiyi
The Division of Diagnostic Neuroradiology at UNC headed by Division Chief Carlos Zamora, MD, PhD, is staffed by seven dedicated neuroradiologists, including Dr. Mauricio Castillo, MA Mauro Distinguished Professor of Radiology, emeritus editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Neuroradiology, and former president and Gold Medalist of both the American Society of Neuroradiology and the American Roentgen Ray Society.
Our fellowship is designed to produce knowledgeable, well-rounded neuroradiologists who excel in meeting the demands of a busy clinical practice, while also being able to flourish in the academic setting. Fellows rotate weekly through clinical services at the main hospital campus and at our nearby outpatient imaging center, with dedicated exposure to all aspects of diagnostic neuroradiology, including brain imaging; pediatric neuroimaging; head and neck imaging; spine imaging; and vascular interventional neuroradiology, in addition to exposure to advanced imaging techniques, including functional MRI, DTI, MR spectroscopy, and perfusion CT and MR.
Ample elective time is provided for personalized rotations including spinal intervention and pain management, clinical neurosciences electives, MR physics, and electives in other radiological subspecialties. In addition, fellows receive on average one academic day per month to work on research and other scholarly activities. Weekly didactic conferences, as well as regular interdisciplinary conferences with the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Head and Neck Surgery, and Pathology augment the fellows’ reading room experience.
Fellows receive a book and travel allowance at the beginning of each year. Salary is determined according to the year of postgraduate training. All fellows are allowed three weeks of vacation per year, an extra week off for Christmas/New Year, and up to one week away to attend a major meeting.
Graduates of the program hold or have held academic positions at the Mayo Clinic, Emory University, Yale University, the Ochsner Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Medical College of Wisconsin, Medical University of South Carolina, Medical College of Georgia, University of Mississippi, University of Texas, Brooke Army Medical Center, Brown University, University of Cincinnati, Autonomous University of Madrid, Val d’Hebron University Hospital of Barcelona, and the University of New Mexico.
