2019-2020 UNC Neuroradiology fellows: Drs. Arpit Gandhi, David Warden, Kelsey Budd & Kyle Golden

Thank you for your interest in the UNC Neuroradiology fellowship program! We offer four ACGME-accredited one-year fellowship positions through the National Residents Matching Program (NRMP) and one second year position. We are proud to say that in nearly 30 years of existence, our fellowship program has filled all of its positions.

The Division of Diagnostic Neuroradiology at UNC includes seven dedicated neuroradiologists and is headed by Dr. Mauricio Castillo, JH Scatliff Distinguished Professor of Radiology, emeritus editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Neuroradiology,  and former president of both  the American Society of Neuroradiology and the American Roentgen Ray Society.

The Division of Vascular Neurointerventional Radiology consists of two dedicated neurointerventional radiologists, Dr. Sten Solander (chief) and Dr. Hortensia Alvarez, two neurosurgeons, one neurointerventional trained neurologist, and one fellow who work in concert with the UNC Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology.

Our fellowship is designed to produce knowledgeable, well-rounded neuroradiologists who will excel in meeting the demands of a busy clinical practice.  Fellows rotate weekly through clinical services at the main hospital campus and at our outpatient imaging center, with dedicated exposure to all aspects of diagnostic neuroradiology, including brain imaging; pediatric neuroimaging; head and neck imaging; spine imaging; and vascular interventional neuroradiology.  Up to four weeks of elective time are also provided for personalized rotations including spinal intervention and pain management, clinical neurosciences electives, and electives in other radiological subspecialties.  In addition, fellows receive on average one academic day per month.  Weekly didactic conferences, as well as regular interdisciplinary conferences with the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Head and Neck Surgery, and Pathology augment the fellows’ reading room experience.

Fellows receive a book and travel allowance at the beginning of each year.  Salary is determined according to the year of postgraduate training.  All fellows are allowed three weeks of vacation per year, an extra week off for Christmas/New Year, and up to one week away to attend a major meeting.

Graduates of the program hold or have held academic positions at the Mayo Clinic, Yale University, the Ochsner Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Medical College of Wisconsin, Medical University of South Carolina, Medical College of Georgia, University of Mississippi, University of Texas, Brooke Army Medical Center, Brown University, University of Cincinnati, Autonomous University of Madrid, Val d’Hebron University Hospital of Barcelona, and the University of New Mexico.

More information regarding fellow salary and benefits can be found at the UNC Health Care GME website.
