About

Charles Burke, MD, Professor of Radiology, has held multiple leadership roles within the Department, including Vice Chair of Strategy (January 2021 – April 2022) and the Department’s Executive Vice Chair (December 2019 – January 2021). He joined UNC Radiology in 1997 as a resident (1997-2001), serving as Chief Resident (1999-2000), and stayed at UNC for his Vascular-Interventional Radiology fellowship (2001-2002). Dr. Burke was appointed Assistant Professor of Radiology in his earliest years on the Department faculty (2002-2005). He relocated to his home state of Arkansas (2005-2006) for a year of private practice, returning to UNC in 2006. He served for over a decade as Division Chief of Vascular-Interventional Radiology (2008-2019).

Dr. Burke chose a career in medicine because it combined his interest in science and a way to positively impact people’s lives.  Before entering medical school, he was fortunate to be able to work in an operating room. He became enamored with surgeons and the various things that could be accomplished in the OR.  Once in medical school, he was introduced to interventional radiology, which combined cutting-edge technology and procedural care.

Dr. Burke has been honored within the institution and in his field over many years of practice. In 2004, Dr. Burke received the Department’s Charles A. Bream Teaching Award, an honor bestowed annually by residents to recognize a faculty member’s dedication to teaching. In 2003, 2006, and 2007, he was named “America’s Top Radiologist” by the Consumers Research Council of America. In 2013, Dr. Burke was named a Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology. In 2020, Dr. Burke was named a Fellow of the American College of Radiology.

Dr. Burke is also a clinical physician at the UNC Center for Heart and Vascular Care.
