Onur Dagliyan and Alakananda (Alka) Das are graduate students in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics who have been awarded 2012 Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Student Research Fellowship. HHMI's new fellowship program supports outstanding international predoctoral students studying in the United States who are ineligible for fellowships or training grants through U.S. federal agencies. The fellowship recognizes the exceptional academic and personal achievements of international scholars and reflects HHMI’s confidence in their potential to become leaders in academic science.

Onur is a graduate student in the labs of Nikolay Dokholyan and Klaus Hahn and his current research focuses on combining computational and experimental approaches to develop new protein caging methods and high throughput production of biosensors that report endogenous protein activity. Onur received his Master of Science from Koc University in Istanbul, Turkey in Chemical and Biological Engineering. During his master's course of study, Onur was funded by a TUBITAK, a national scholarship sponsored by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey. He joined UNC in 2010.

Alka is a graduate student in the lab of Kevin Slep and her current research focuses on elucidating the mechanism of the Che-12-dependent ciliogenesis through in vivo, biochemical and structural analysis. Alka received her Master of Technology in Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in India. She was a 2008 DAAD Scholar working on a research project funded by the German Academic Exchange Program before joining UNC in 2010.
