Mahmoud Shobair, under the direction of Dr. Nikolay Dokholyan, successfully defended his dissertation and received his Ph.D. on April 20, 2017. The title of his dissertation is “Structure-function determinants of activation of the epithelial sodium channel.”
Mahmoud did his undergraduate work at the University of Florida in Gainesville. After studying physics, his graduate research focused on combining computational and experimental techniques to construct a quaternary structure of the epithelial sodium channel. The uncovered structure-function relationships help us understand the biophysical principles of epithelial sodium absorption, and how that can be altered by disease-linked mutations.
Mahmoud received the dissertation completion fellowship from the graduate school. He is pursuing a career in mental health research.
