Published "A Novel Mechanism for Autoantigenicity: Condensate Conformational Change" in Biomolecules. How or why do self-proteins become autoantigens, the precursors to autoimmune diseases? Most theories invoke unidentified genetic and environmental causes or failures and deficiencies of the immune system. Instead, we hypothesized a novel mechanism that is a consequence of normal cell function.

Cook and Ramos Labs publish “The RNA binding protein ZFP36L2 displays tissue-selective mRNA targeting in mice” in RNA Biology. The study examines how the RNA-binding protein ZFP36L2 targets messenger RNAs in a tissue-selective manner, contributing to a deeper understanding of post-transcriptional gene regulation. Using a newly developed algorithm and cancer genome data, UNC scientists (Liu lab) identified a class of mutations that cancer uses to promote survival and growth. Their findings show how colorectal cancer hijacks BUD13 mutations to inactivate a major tumor suppressor and suggest a new targeted treatment approach for patients

Congratulations to the Kuhlman lab on a new (pre-print) publication highlighting their latest research in computational protein design and molecular engineering. The Kuhlman Lab at UNC uses computational and experimental methods to design proteins, with research spanning novel protein structures, complexes, switches, vaccines, and deep learning–enabled protein design approaches.

In some patients with blood disorders, platelet transfusion therapy doesn’t work. UNC School of Medicine scientists used real-time imaging and mouse models to show why. Their work could guide clinical studies and better use of platelet therapy.

Wolfgang Bergmeier has been serving the department with Dale Ramsden as the co-director of the Graduate Studies program for the past 6 months. Dr. Bergmeier will become the Director of Graduate Studies beginning January 1, 2020.
