Department of Genetics faculty, postdocs, students and collaborators published 12 papers during July 25th – August 7th 2021.

Fernando Pardo Manuel de Villena, Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Genetics, was recently interviewed by the Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Toxicology Program, Dr. Rick Woychik.

Drs. Jason Stein (Assistant Professor) and Hyejung Won (Assistant Professor) have been awarded an U01 grant from the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) for their project titled “Discovery and validation of genetic variation impacting the gene regulatory landscape during human cortical development”.

We are excited to announce that Nancy Sey, who works in Dr. Hyejung Won’s lab and is co-mentored by Dr. Joyce Besheer, was selected as a 2021 HHMI Gilliam Fellow.

Department of Genetics faculty, postdocs, students and collaborators published 17 papers during June 27 - July 10, 2021.

A research team led by Dr. Damaris Lorenzo, Assistant Professor in the UNC Department of Cell Biology and Physiology and member of the Neuroscience Center, discovered a new neurodevelopmental syndrome that is caused by pathogenic variants in the SPTBN1 gene which encodes neuronal βII-spectrin.

Dr. Katarzyna (Kasia) Kedziora joined the Department of Genetics in January 2021 as an Assistant Professor.

Dr. Adriana Beltran has been promoted to Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics, effective July 1, 2021.

Dr. Jason Whitmire has been promoted to Full Professor, effective July 1, 2021.
