Brittany Winstead joined the UNC Radiology team in February 2024 as an administrative assistant, bringing a wealth of experience and a positive attitude that has quickly made her an invaluable part of the Pediatric, Vascular, and Neurointerventional Radiology divisions. We sat down with Brittany to learn more about her journey, her love for healthcare, and the inspiration that keeps her going.
The Journey to UNC
Before joining UNC, Brittany worked as a payroll technician at Piedmont Community College. But her roots in healthcare run deep. Brittany started her career as a nursing assistant in 2010, and from 2011 to 2018, she worked at both UNC and Duke Hospitals. “I’ve always been in healthcare,” Brittany shared. “When I had my son and with COVID, I stepped away from patient care but knew I wanted to stay in the field. I was excited to return to a more hands-on role, working with patients, students, and faculty at UNC.”
The COVID Shift
Brittany’s decision to pivot away from nursing came when her son Ashton was born in late 2019. With COVID looming, the uncertainties of working in direct patient care as a new mom were daunting. “I didn’t know what to expect,” Brittany recalled. “I was just grateful I could stay home with him for his first year.” This period not only allowed her to bond with her son but also opened new doors for her to explore administrative roles in healthcare.
A Native North Carolinian with Deep Roots
Born and raised in Roxboro, North Carolina, Brittany speaks fondly of her hometown, especially her close-knit family. Her grandfather’s farm played a significant role in her childhood. “He’s been a farmer all my life, and I grew up helping him on the farm,” she said. Even now, as a mom to four-year-old Ashton, she continues the tradition of spending time on the farm and passing down those values to the next generation.
An Impactful Role at UNC Radiology
At UNC Radiology, Brittany serves as the primary point of contact for the faculty. Whether it’s scheduling meetings, arranging travel, or organizing grand rounds, Brittany takes immense pride in her work. “I’m their go-to person. I love that my role keeps me on my toes and allows me to multitask,” she shared. Brittany’s knack for learning each faculty member’s communication preferences ensures that she tailors her support to meet their individual needs.
“Brittany has been a fantastic addition to our division. She has kept us organized and efficient. She has always been willing to jump on any task we present to her,” says David M Mauro, MD, Associate Professor and Chief of Interventional Radiology.
A Love for Multitasking and Connecting
Brittany thrives in her role because she loves multitasking and building relationships. “I enjoy staying busy, meeting new people, and being on the move,” she said with a smile. Her outgoing personality and strong communication skills have made her a favorite among her colleagues. “I always try to keep a smile on my face, whether I’m in the office or sending an email. It’s important to me that my personality comes through in everything I do.”
“Brittany has been a fast learner after joining our department. She has excelled at navigating the complexities of different schedules and tasks. I am so thankful for her hard work and dedication,” says Nikki Keefe, MD Assistant Professor, Radiology.
Balancing Work and Family
When she’s not managing the needs of UNC Radiology faculty, Brittany is all about spending time with Ashton. “Whatever he wants to do, I’m there,” she laughed. Whether reading, shopping, or playing outside, Brittany cherishes their time together.
A Mama Bear with a Big Heart
Brittany describes herself as a “Mama Bear,” fiercely protective of her family and friends. She is the oldest of three and she makes sure her brother and sister know they can come to her about anything. She’s also deeply compassionate. “I’ve been through hardships, and I feel blessed. I try to help others whenever I can,” she said, sharing stories of how she anonymously donates to people in need from her community.
Looking Ahead
As for the future, Brittany’s role model is her mother, who has worked tirelessly as a caregiver. “She’s my best friend and my biggest inspiration,” Brittany said. If she could offer advice to her younger self, it would be, “Go with your first decision. Don’t second-guess yourself.”
When asked where she sees herself living one day, Brittany didn’t hesitate. “Somewhere by the water, probably the beach,” she said, envisioning a peaceful life near the ocean.
Brittany’s dedication, energy, and warmth have already made a lasting impression on the UNC Radiology team.
As Carolina V. Guimaraes, MD, Division Chief of Pediatric Radiology, put it, “Brittany consistently brings a positive attitude and shows a remarkable willingness to learn and assist others. We are so happy to have her as part of the team!”
